Head of Physiotherapy elected chair of chartered professional body

Dr Helena Johnson, Head of Subject for Physiotherapy at York St John University, has been elected chair of council of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP).

Helena, who joined York St John University in September 2007, received the honour at the Society’s annual congress. The CSP represents over 50,000 members and was founded in 1894, receiving the royal charter in 1920. Helena is the first physiotherapist holding a doctorate to become chair of council in its history; prior to 1974 all chairs of council were medical doctors.

As Head of Subject at York St John University, Helena leads a team of physiotherapists who deliver pre-registration and postgraduate physiotherapy education. This also includes continuing professional development (CPD) opportunities for assistants and a range of allied health professionals.

Helena has 20 years of experience of working in the NHS as a clinician in senior posts. She has worked with a range of clients and health professionals in clinical specialities in the acute sector and in other environments including community paediatrics and the prison service. In 1998 a change in career direction led her into academia, beginning at Northumbria University as a senior lecturer in physiotherapy and moving to Teesside University from 2002-2007.

Commenting on her appointment as the new chair of council of the CSP, Helena said:

“The role at the CSP enables me to keep up to date with changes across all health sectors in the UK, as well as in Europe and more globally; this helps enhance the curriculum for students on the physiotherapy programmes at York St John University. The team here prepare our graduates to work in any setting where physiotherapy is needed.”
