Note: This position statement and paper were co-authored by Deaf
and hearing LIdIA members and colleagues from York St John
University. One of the principal co-authors is
a Deaf academic staff member of LIdIA. Other Deaf
academics and experts from York St John University, some of
whom consider themselves bilingual users of BSL and written
English, took part in the discussion and drafting
